FOURTH GRADE CLASS INVENTS NEW ENGLISH WORD
A local Elementary School class has successfully added a new word to the English language by petitioning the Coleman American Dictionary for the last year in a contest their teacher proposed as homework.
Mrs. Tammy Driggs' fourth grade class created a new word "frobble" and it will be published in the next edition of the famous dictionary. The class invented the noun to describe the following: a story that contains parts that are factual and fictional.
Mrs. Driggs came up with the idea after two members of the class didn't complete their vocabulary assignment and told a white lie in order to get out of trouble.
"The assignment not only helped the students think outside of the box in vocabulary, but also played their irresponsibility against them. Since coming up with this idea to create a word, all of the students have been timely when turning in assignments," Driggs said.
"I wish I had come up with that idea," said Edgar Deevers, "She has a way with words and children, you could say. This will do wonders for our school image."
A spokeswoman for the Coleman American Dictionary said they couldn't look past the word as something that would be relevant and needed in our English language. "From its spelling to its connotation to its specific definition, 'frobble' is here to stay," she said.
The class will travel to the King Phillips talk show next week as guests introducing the new word. "We get to go to New York and we get to be on TV and my grandmother is going to tape it if she figures out how to use the TiVo," said fourth grader Joshua Olives.
